What is the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree?

It is a large Christmas tree, typically a Norway spruce, displayed annually in Rockefeller Center, Midtown Manhattan, as a centerpiece of the holiday season in New York City.

When did the tradition of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree start?

The tradition dates back to 1931, when construction workers put up the first modest tree. The first official lighting ceremony was held in 1933, making it a longstanding annual event.

How is the tree selected?

The tree is usually a Norway spruce around 69 to 100 feet tall, selected by the head gardener who visits potential trees, often in the tri-state area, looking for a perfectly shaped specimen dense enough to block the sky from view.

When is the tree installed and lit?

The tree is installed in mid-November and lit in a public ceremony on the Wednesday evening following Thanksgiving. The lighting ceremony has been broadcast live on NBC since 1997.

What is special about the decorations?

The tree is decorated with over 50,000 energy-efficient LED lights, and topped with a large star made of Swarovski crystals, a tradition since 2004.

What was unique about the first tree?

The first tree was a 20-foot balsam fir decorated with homemade garlands of cranberries and paper by workers’ families during the Great Depression, symbolizing community spirit.

How many people visit the tree annually?

Approximately 125 million people visit or experience the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree each year, either in person or via broadcast.

Has the tree ever not been lit?

During World War II, blackout regulations meant the tree was not lit from 1942 to 1944. Instead, patriotic decorations were used.

What happens to the tree after the holiday season?

Post-holiday, some trees are donated to charity, such as Habitat for Humanity, to be repurposed for building homes or other uses.

Are there any notable traditions at the tree lighting ceremony?

Yes, the lighting event includes performances by famous musicians, appearances by the Mayor of New York City and other dignitaries, and is considered the official start of the holiday season in NYC.

Where is the tree located in Rockefeller Center?

The tree stands in the main plaza in front of the GE Building (now known as 30 Rockefeller Plaza) and above the iconic ice skating rink.
