Experience one of New York City’s most spectacular holiday traditions in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. Every Christmas season, residents transform their homes and front yards into dazzling displays filled with thousands of lights, giant ornaments, inflatable characters, animatronics, and elaborate Christmas decorations.

The displays are spread across several residential blocks, particularly around 11th to 13th Avenues and between 83rd and 86th Streets. There is no official entrance or admission fee — visitors simply walk through the neighborhood and enjoy the decorations from the sidewalks.

The lights traditionally begin appearing around Thanksgiving and remain on throughout the Christmas season, with many displays continuing into early January. For the best experience, visit after dark, when the displays are fully illuminated.

Please remember that Dyker Heights is a residential neighborhood. Be respectful of residents, avoid blocking driveways or sidewalks, keep noise to a minimum, and do not enter private properties. NYC and Brooklyn Community Board 10 have specifically asked visitors to respect local residents and keep sidewalks and driveways clear.

Dyker Heights is especially busy in December, so visiting on a weekday evening can be more comfortable than going on a weekend.

How to Get There

The most convenient subway option is usually the R train to 86th Street, followed by a walk toward the decorated blocks. Another option is the D train to 79th Street.

When to Go

The displays are most impressive after sunset. December is the peak period, but you can generally see decorations from around Thanksgiving through the first days of January.

Is It Free?

Yes. There is no admission fee to walk around the neighborhood. Guided bus and walking tours are available separately, but they are not required to see the lights.
